Artist and ACT Lecturer, Kelly Nipper has invited her Performance Art Workshop (PAW) class to develop a set of actions inspired by their own experimental artistic community, with its unique rituals, missions, ethics, and aesthetics. Performances will take place within the context of ICA Boston’s Leap Before You Look: Black Mountain College 1933-1957 exhibition, as part of Theater Piece No.1×50.

Declared the first Happening and later named Theater Piece No. 1, an unnamed performance took place in August 1952 at Black Mountain College that would become one of the most famous events in the college’s history. Nipper was invited by the ICA, along with five Boston-based artists to reimagine Theater Piece No. 1 by proposing a series of actions that will take place in the ICA galleries and throughout the museum.

For a detailed schedule of performance actions, please see our event page.

Also in relation to ICA’s Leap Before You Look exhibition, ACT Professor Renée Green will participate in Northeastern University’s After Black Mountain College: Community and Collaboration Symposium.

The symposium aims to “examine the influence of Black Mountain College’s experimental teaching models on contemporary art” through a series of conversations featuring historians, scholars and artists. The conversations engage the following topics: Experimental Art and the Performance of Life, Markers of Influence, and Comparative Pedagogies and Utopia.

Renée Green will participate in Markers of Influence, a panel with historians Michael Loeb and Amanda Reeser Lawrence, moderated by Carrie Lambert-Beatty. Northeastern University’s art historian and ACT Research Affiliate Dr. Gloria Sutton has organized the symposium with Dr. Jenni Sorkin, from UCSB; the symposium will take place on October 30th, 2015 at the Northeastern University Center for the Arts in Boston.

Please visit the Symposium’s website for further information and the complete program.
